As event florists, we are often asked to make elab­o­rate dis­plays for all types of cel­e­bra­tions through­out the year and are well-versed in many dif­fer­ent cul­tur­al tra­di­tions when it comes to flo­rals! This class was orig­i­nal­ly part of our in-per­son class­es at our stu­dio in Los Ange­les, we show you how to make a love­ly dis­play for the Lunar New Year using tra­di­tion­al red and gold col­ored flowers.

Year of the Dragon

The Lunar New Year date changes every year since it’s based on the moon cycles. In 2024, it will be cel­e­brat­ed on Feb­ru­ary 10 and is the Year of the Drag­on! Our flower friends from Chi­nese cul­ture have taught us that red is to wish for good for­tune and hap­pi­ness when com­bined with gold for wealth team up to be the col­ors for the New Year. The Lunar New Year isn’t only observed in Chi­na, it’s cel­e­brat­ed across sev­er­al coun­tries and oth­er ter­ri­to­ries in Asia, includ­ing South Korea and Sin­ga­pore. In Viet­nam, the Lunar New Year is known as Tết, and in Tibet it’s “Losar.” In the U.S., though, it’s most com­mon­ly asso­ci­at­ed with what’s often called Chi­nese New Year, the Amer­i­can ver­sion of Chi­na’s 15-day-long festivities.
