Banning Museum Celebration of Roses

Garden Roses

Garden Roses on display at the Banning Museum Celebration of Roses on May 3, 2014

I was asked to represent Flower Duet as a guest lecturer at The Banning Museum for its Celebration of Roses Day on May 3, 2014.  The Rose Society displayed their home grown roses and there was a lecture on growing garden roses in addition to my lecture on how to arrange with roses. Here are some photos from that day.

About the Banning Museum

In the heart of Wilmington sits a little-known treasure, The Banning Museum. Phineas Banning—entrepreneur, the founder of the city of Wilmington, and “the Father of the Port of Los Angeles”—built the 23-room residence in 1864. In 1927 the residence, stagecoach barn, and the surrounding 20 acres of parkland were acquired by the City of Los Angeles.

Sugared Rose Petals

There were lots of goodies to be had all involving rose petals! I drank some wonderful rose petal tea!

Celebration of Roses 2014

All were welcome to join everyone for a very special day in the garden! All participants who brought roses from their own garden received a small gift for sharing. In addition to Kit’s lecture and floral design demonstration,  Gloria Leinbach talked about “Why we celebrate Roses.” There was a children’s activity where kids could make their own rose petal potpourri. And a chance for all to sample a taste of history through rose tea & desserts.  Rose experts were on hand to discuss roses and answer questions.

Kit Wertz of Flower Duet gave a lecture and demonstration on how to work with roses in floral design along with other flowers that can be easily grown in a home garden.

Hydrangea and Lisianthus Centerpiece

Kit created three designs for the workshop and gave away the two that had the roses in them. This is the design she showed using the grid method.
