Make a Boutonnière for Grooms, Grads & Dads

Perfect White Rose Boutonnière on TuxJune is for grooms, Dads and grads! So, we thought it was time for a primer on how to create a boutonnière. We’ve created tips on how to choose the best flowers for boutonnières, how to make them with step-by-step tips in a video and provide a boutonnière making kit for you to make your own designs.

A boutonnière (French): is a floral decoration usually worn by men, typically a single flower or bud. Boutonnière is the French word for buttonhole. While worn frequently in the past, boutonnières are now usually reserved for special occasions for which formal wear is standard, such as at proms, homecomings, funerals, and weddings. (Women who wear jackets on these occasions also often may wear “buttonholes”, but more typically a woman would wear a corsage. Nowadays, a lapel pin is worn more often than flowers on business suits.

Where to Go See Flowers: Summer 2014

by Kit Wertz

Flower Carpet Brussels

Flower Carpet in the Grand Place, Brussels, Belgium. Photo by Wikipedia.

Brussels, Belgium Flower Carpet

Every two years, the Grand-Place of Brussels is covered in begonia and chrysanthemum blooms in a traditional Turkish rug pattern that is a fabulous site to see. This year, the flower festival will be held starting August 14, 2014 when workers lay the flowers in one day!

Back in the late 90s, I worked in The Netherlands and spent weekends driving around that beautiful country getting all sorts of flower inspiration and in many parts of northern Belgium, too. I spent one long Saturday afternoon in the Grand-Place drinking Belgian beer & writing postcards and had no idea that this flower festival was held there every two years. Oh, how I wish I’d known! If you are in Europe this summer, try to make it to Belgium for this event. Or, if you aren’t in Belgium in August, go to Brussels, Bruges or Antwerp anyway. They are all worth multiple visits. I loved the people, the food (chocolates), the art, watching lace made by hand and the beautiful well-preserved architecture.
