We love a good floral design and were more than happy to obtain a copy of Susan McLeary’s latest book on floral design, Flowers For All. If you don’t know Susan’s work, check it out on her lovely and inspirational Instagram feed @passionsue. You won’t be disappointed in what you find on her feed or in her book. I downloaded a Kindle version for my Fire Tablet of her first book, The Art of Wearable Flowers in 2021 when I needed to know how best to make a floral necklace. Sue’s instructions in that book were flawless and I succeeded in meeting my client’s request with flying colors!

Who Would Like this Book?

This book is more personal than her first. Sue talks about the importance of having flowers in your own life (and we wholeheartedly agree with that notion). Flowers make people happy so why not get permission to arrange flowers for yourself, your friends, clients, and more? She covers the basics when it comes to tools and gives photo and text instructions on how to string hyacinth florets. Sue explains her view on using natural supports for flowers and enjoying them at the moment. There is not a lot of detail or step-by-step on how to make a floral design. This book is beautifully photographed and offers a plethora of inspiration for a floral designer who has some experience already knows the basics and is looking to expand their horizons and repertoire.

Why we Like This Book

My favorite part of the book is the Flowers for All section where she showcases beautiful yellow forsythia branches blanketing a wall of a room and an arch of bittersweet vines in another room. Lovely.

Bittersweet Vine Branch Arch by Sue McLeary and her book Flowers for All

I don’t want to give too much away! My advice to all students when purchasing flower books for their own collection is to try and check them out from your local library. But, if you want to own this book, you can order it from Amazon.com or Sue herself! We met Sue at the 2021 Slow Flowers Summit at Filoli. She was one of the guest speakers and we loved her demonstration on foam-free arches so much that that’s pretty much the only way we make our arch florals!

Well done, Sue! Keep up the beautiful work and inspiration for all of us!
